Students will be reporting back to school soon and that requires shopping for supplies. Along with books, paper, and pencils, it’s important for students to have reliable tech available to use such as desktops, laptops, and tablets. A great option for purchasing new tech while saving with great deals is to buy used or refurbished.
Refurbished vs. used
A common misconception is that buying a used item is the same as buying refurbished. Refurbished products are different than used products because used products have wear from previous owners while refurbished devices are returned to the manufacturer or seller for some other reason. For example, the item was damaged in shipping, it was an unwanted gift, the product packaging was altered (but the product wasn’t used), the product has a defective part, etc. Although used and refurbished items can no longer be considered new, they are cleaned up, tested, and repaired by the team.
Benefits of reuse
One of the great benefits of buying used or refurbished is vendors apply discounts usually anywhere from 15 – 30 percent. That would be $150 – $300 of savings for $1000 item. Think of what else you could purchase with your savings! You may even find yourself being able to afford a more advanced model than you could buying new. Another benefit is product reliability. Products are tested multiple times throughout the process of refurbishment to ensure any issues are fixed before being put back onto the market. Finally, you’ll be helping the environment by keeping electronics out of landfills.
What to look out for
If you’re ready to check out a refurbisher, you’ll want to make sure you choose the right one. Not all vendors are created equal and choosing the wrong one can get you stuck with a product that doesn’t work properly. Misleading retailers can market a product with incorrect information. If that is the case, they usually don’t offer a warranty or return policy. Any refurbishment program should have full disclosure, so you know exactly what you are getting. Products that are certified, have a warranty or extended service program or return policy are the way to go.
Sunnking has a retail store, eCaboose, where we sell refurbished electronics and an eBay store as well. To visit either of those go to eCaboose.com or ebaystores.com/Sunnking.
